Helplessness : The Catastrophe of Nigeria

I will never understand the state Nigeria is in and how we got to this point. I can never fully get the explanation as to why helplessness is synonymous with people of my country. It beats my imagination that people who are put in positions to serve see it as an avenue for showcasing wickedness and cruelty; Treating their fellow countrymen with disdain and as if they were animals or lesser humans.

You go to see a public or civil servant and they make sure you realize it was your curse for coming there. You go to the hospital and health workers (Nurses, Lab scientists, attendants, Doctors, and so on) who are professionally trained to be calm and patient act like daughters of Jezebel or Sons of the devil. You try to contact customer service representatives for complaint or inquiry; they make sure you get frustrated from their not picking up and never call again. You have a problem with the bank and your own money; they frustrate you with the 7 to 10 working days concept when they know damn well this can be sorted out within 48 hours. You try to reach your electricity or water providers and they are no good either. Or is it the school system? That is the beginning of frustration for a growing Nigerian. No organization in Nigeria has the interest of Nigerians at heart. The situation is disheartening. It feels like there is a competition for iniquity, depravity, roguery among all spheres of the Nigerian service providers. They are devoid of every human emotion.

While the service providers are mean and evil, the citizens add insult to injury. Every time someone tries to complain about receiving bad service, there are citizen who have received the same or worse treatment. Instead of backing the victim, they start making comments like “why are you complaining? Are you the only one or are you the first? It is like you do not know you are in Nigeria Are you new or are you a learner?” blah blah blah... fueling the energy of the culprits. The fact that it happens frequently, does that make it right and normal? Does that make it any less hurtful? Maybe just maybe if everyone was on the same page with the bad treatment they received, then it would be easier to seek a solution but then when a person or group of persons feels it is a norm in Nigeria and we must endure it forever silently, then there is no technique to seek for a way out.

The helplessness of Nigerians is visible It cannot be stated in a simplistic manner. Nigerians suffer in every area possible; we suffer in the hands of the Judicial, Legislative and Executives. We would never have a say and our opinions never count. we are to take in everything handed down to us, we are led like sheep to the slaughter and we do not open our mouth, we nurse our pain while secretly wishing and hoping things would get better. While it is good that we do not lose hope, we need more than hope to get us out of our predicament we need more than hope to scale through this hurdle. 

This doesn’t have to be our reality; we do not have to live this way ‘hoping’ forever. But we need to stand up and decide we do not want to continue in misery. We need to speak up and speak for those who need it whenever and wherever we are. We can stand only by lifting others. Imagine how that nurse would be shaken if everyone cautioned her for being rude to a patient and not give an excuse for her impunity. Picture the officer’s face when he tries to harass you and everyone in the bus goes berserk for it. I know it is not going to be as easy as rubbing butter on bread but our children will thank us if we started today.
