The APC government came
with an agenda during the 2015 election campaign to make 1 dollar equal to 1
naira. Some people actually believed this was possible and I really cannot
blame them. The naira value has been falling and as we speak, one dollar equals
around 360 naira. That is outrageous. One of the Reasons for the plummeting of
the naira has been stated to be “excess demand of the dollar thereby putting
pressure on the dollar”. Hence the question; can a dollar equal a naira? What
can be done to reduce the demand of dollar and equate it to the naira?
Now before we begin
this discussion, I want to state clearly that this will not look into the
economical analysis of the situation, neither is this some PhD student research
work on moving the economy forward. When we have consulted with our experts in
analyzing the poor economic situation of Nigeria, you would hear from me.
Secondly, this isn’t to throw shades at any person or group of persons. This is
only stating a part of the reason why the naira to the dollars keeps
skyrocketing. And I believe I am entitled to an opinion.
That said; let me come
to the point. Part of the reasons why there is always increased demand of
dollars is because of Nigerian celebrities and the Elites. This is another
category of people in this country who needs serious and special enlightenment
and sensitization. Once a Nigerian celebrity makes a little money, they want to
go abroad and spend in foreign currencies. They go to buy houses there. Some go
there to buy cars, others go to give birth and the useless reasons are
unending. It’s nauseating to say the least. They spend amounts of money on all
of the designers outside and never promote any Nigerian business because this
country is not good enough for them. But this is where they act, sing, dance,
campaign and any other thing they do to survive. And we are the ones who
promote them and vote for them. Now tell me, when all the Nigerian celebrities
and elites or hell Nigerians who make a little money decide to go outside and
spend it, why won’t there be increased demand for dollar? Why won’t there be
unnecessary pressure on the naira?
Take a look at a
Nigerian music video. 99% of the time they keep playing with dollars and
throwing it around their videos. Again I ask, is the dollar the official
currency of Nigeria? Do we now operate with two currencies here in Nigeria?
Since when has the naira lost so much value that its face cannot be shown to
the world? Why are we fond of promoting things that do not concern us? These
are videos that go around the world and we just keep fooling ourselves everywhere
with a currency that does not belong to us. Giving off an impression that the
naira is distasteful, useless, good for nothing and should not be shown
anywhere in the world. Dollar has become the official emblem of “I have
arrived”. Poverty stricken mentality has ravaged the minds of many Nigerian
celebrities so much so that they do not know what to do when they are hit with
millions (No offense)
For every occasion,
Nigerians are flying outside Nigeria. They go out to celebrate birthdays,
weddings, child naming ceremony, anniversary, winning an election,
graduation…anything. They always find a reason to be anywhere but home. And we
are complaining about the increased demand of the dollar? That is obtuse.
Nigerians are so in
love with the west. We worship the ground they walk on and would kiss their feet
and a** at the slightest opportunity given.
If we want to reduce
the pressure on the naira, then we would have to focus of Nigeria made
products. We would have to buy Nigerian to grow Nigeria. We would have to make
Nigeria like the west. We would have to bring whatever it is that excites us
about being there to Nigeria. If the dollar has to equal one naira, then the
dollar has to stop being the second official currency of this country. We have
to stop buying houses there and going over there to celebrate weddings. The
money spent in these countries are too much and could be used for better
development of the Nigerian community.
Until this love for the
west wax cold, and the love for our own country, our currency and our products
wax stronger, One dollar will never equal One naira and no amount of policies
and procedures can change that. It will never happen
